A team from Salisbury Township School District participated in an Apple “What’s next?” event on February 24-25, 2015, in Austin, TX. The “What’s next?” event was designed to provide selected districts the opportunity to work with Dr. Damian Bebell, Dr. Ruben Puentedura, and Dr. Holly Ludgate to develop their own research plans to evaluate their technology initiative.

In the above linked podcast episode, wee talk about designing a research to help us understand critical factors for success for teachers who are designing transformative learning experiences for their students. For our research, we identified 6 teachers who are innovative instructional planners and teachers. These teachers demonstrate competency in developing a variety of learning experiences (including transformative learning experiences) along the SAMR continuum.

Here is the research plan developed at the “What’s next?” event:

Looking at our data from recent evaluation of TL2020, we have discovered a majority of teaching and learning experiences with technology are activities which occur below the line on the SAMR framework.  While below the line activities are important, we want to ensure students have opportunities to experience activities in all levels of the framework.

Research Question:

  1. Phase I – What are the critical factors of success for our teachers who are creating transformational learning experiences?
  2. Phase II – Action Planning – What factors of success can the district foster?
    1. What role do teachers have?
    2. What role do building leaders have?
    3. What role do district leaders have?

Methodology:

  • Qualitative – identifying critical factors
    • identify and interview teachers
      • identify 5-6 teachers that are “innovators” –
        • cross representation of building/content area?
        • demonstrated competency is developing variety of learning experiences along the SAMR continuum, including transformational experiences
      • talk with teachers about their perceptions of technology integration in their classrooms
        • Identify a teaching and learning activity which you believe was a rich learning experience for your students.
        • Where would you place the lesson on the SAMR framework?
        • How did you plan that lesson? How did you learn the skills and content needed to implement that lesson?
        • How comfortable are you with integrating technology and developing above the line experiences for your students?
        • What factors contribute to your comfortability?
          • Ideas we want to explore
            • Social networking
            • Peer networking
            • Professional learning opportunities
            • Safe risk-taking
            • Grade level
            • Content area
            • External motivation
            • Internal motivation
        • Of those factors, which could the district foster?
        • What factors do you think your colleagues (who would identify themselves as less comfortable) would benefit from?
        • What could you as a teacher (or other peer network) do to increase colleagues’ comfortability?
        • What could building leaders do to increase colleagues’ comfortability?
        • What could district admin do to increase colleagues’ comfortability?
    • interviewing principals
    • Collecting data around perceptions of any “innovator” teachers in the building
      • Protocol mirrors teacher protocol
      • Uncovers perceptions of building leaders
      • Uncovers additional supports building leaders may be providing at request of teachers

Data Analysis:

  • What are the critical factors identified across the teacher group?
  • Are teacher/principal perceptions similar or different?
  • Recommendations reported in terms of how the district can support these factors of success. What is the role of principal leadership? What is the role of central office leadership?
